An alumnus, elected as a Fellow of INSA (FNA)

Name : Prof. Ashis Kumar Nandi
Date : 15-09-2026

---

Bose Institute Alumni Association (BIAA) is proud to report that Prof. Ashis Kumar Nandi, an alumnus of Bose Institute, was recently elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (FNA). Prof. Nandi did his Ph.D. in the year 1998 while working at the Plant Molecular and Cellular Genetics (PMCG) laboratory of Prof. S.K. Sen. Currently, Prof. Nandi is working at the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), specializing in plant immunity and molecular plant pathology. His research focuses on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of plant immune responses, as well as development & retention of infection memory in plants, apart from elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying plant defense responses and host–pathogen interactions, with the aim of identifying key regulatory genes and signaling networks involved in disease resistance. Prof. Nandi’s work contributes to advancing strategies for developing resilient, disease-resistant crops and improving agricultural sustainability.

Earlier, Prof. Nandi was elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (FNASc), India, and also received various other prestigious awards/honours.

A prestigious fellowship awarded to Dr. Prateeka Borar

Name : Dr. Prateeka Borar
Date : 01-09-2026

---

A recent graduate, Dr. Prateeka Borar, from Dr. Smarajit Polley’s laboratory, Department of Biological Sciences, Bose Institute, was awarded a fellowship to join EMBL Heidelberg as an EIPOD-LinC fellow to carry out interdisciplinary postdoctoral research in a highly collaborative setting involving multiple labs in Germany. To the best of our knowledge, Dr. Borar is the first graduate from Bose Institute, Kolkata, to receive this fellowship and perhaps the first from this part of the country as well. Heartiest congratulations to Dr. Prateeka Borar, and we wish her all the very best for her future endeavours.

A milestone work of the eighties on photochemical transformation

Name : Dr. Amit Chakrabarti
Date : 01-09-2026

---

A methodology was developed at Bose Institute nearly 40 years ago in the Phytochemistry Laboratory at Bose Institute by Amit Chakrabarti (alumnus, 1989 batch, Ex-Principal, Malda Zilla School, Malda, West Bengal) under the guidance of Late Prof. D. P. Chakraborty during his Ph.D. work, where PHOTOCHEMICAL TRANSFORMATION was performed for the ring expansion of pyranocarbazole alkaloids, which was published in Tetrahedron Letters (1988, 29: 6625-6627). This work has been cited several times; however, currently, one of the leading synthetic organic chemists, Prof Baatein Nay, Research Director at CNRS, France, has accepted the work as a novel process and used it in an important synthetic procedure (Org. Lett. 2022, 24: 4029–4033).

Prof. Nay appreciated it by saying, “… it is certain that your work was seminal to ours and I am grateful to you for that!”.

This is really nice and great on the part of both Dr. Amit Chakrabarti and Bose Institute to have such an esteemed appreciation for a methodology developed almost 40 years ago. It is definitely a milestone work, as it is still pertinent!
